Split liability all too often means no liability

Very often when a new damp proof course is installed the required re-plastering part of the installation is completed by a different contractor. This is often the case when building contractors sub-contract the damp proof course injection work to a specialist contractor. Several years later if a problem arises, the client will search through the paperwork for the damp proof course guarantee. On contacting the damp proofing specialist they are told the problem is with the re-plastering and not covered by the guarantee. The building contractor of course doesn’t issue a long-term guarantee and often doesn’t want to know either. A damp proof course guarantee with split liability makes it almost worthless. The best advice if you’re thinking of installing a new damp proof course is to ensure the damp proofing specialist carries out the injection and re-plastering elements of the work.
